COVID-19 and Occupational Health and Safety

The Occupational Medicine Division has been very active on workplace issues related to COVID-19 aimed at the South African workforce in general and the health workforce in particular. Consultants and registrars have been providing clinical and technical support on OHS issues affecting health workers at Groote Schuur Hospital.
At provincial level, a new OHS policy for COVID-19 for the Western Cape Health Department as well as instruments in the relation to risk assessments have been developed, that have been supported by training of OHS managers. A/Prof Shahieda Adams and Dr Amy Burdzik have also been supporting public health medicine staff on contact tracing and workplace COVID-19 outbreak investigations.
At national level, Prof Mohamed Jeebhay has been involved in the National Occupational Health and Safety Stream for COVID-19, developing guidelines on health monitoring of workers and providing input the recent OHS directive of the Department of Employment and Labour that addresses the health and safety of issues of all workers in relation to the unlocking of workplaces.
