

Master of Public Health (MPH)
Introduction
The School of Public Health and Family Medicine is pleased to offer a coursework plus dissertation Master of Public Health degree programme open to South African and international candidates with at least a four year Bachelors degree. It is offered as a multidisciplinary programme and is based on existing strengths at UCT, resulting in an emphasis on epidemiology, health economics and systems, clinical research and quantitative research. There is a growing component in social science and qualitative research applied to areas such as health services, human rights and gender.
The programme is open to candidates from a variety of backgrounds and countries who will participate in intensive classroom and project based learning to acquire knowledge and skills to assist them in contributing towards effective and equitable public health and health care systems. There are five tracks: General, Epidemiology, Clinical Research, Health Systems, and Health Economics, each with its own course requirements.
The programme is taught as a series of semester length courses, some of which are compulsory for the degree and others elective. General, Epidemiology, Clinical Research and Health Systems track candidates will need to complete 10 courses plus a mini-dissertation, achievable in 18-24 months of full-time study or longer with part-time study. Residence in Cape Town for the course component is essential. Health Economics track candidates will need to complete 8 courses plus a mini-dissertation, achievable in 18 months of full-time study or longer with part-time study.
