COVID-19 and the school response: Looking back to learn what we can do better

Worried about sending your child back to school? You are not alone. A lot of South African parents are facing this puzzle. But we need to be informed by best evidence to judge what is the right strategy for schools now. Nandi Siegfried, a UCT graduate and Cathy Mathews, an Honorary Associate Professor in the School of Public Health and Family Medicine, set out the evidence base that should inform best policy options at the moment, outlining what a comprehensive school health service based at school level could do to advance prevention of COVID-19 transmission, emphasising the need for careful surveillance and for appropriate institutional leadership to ensure safe schooling while limiting transmission risks.
